Artist's Reception:
Friday, January 13
5 - 8 pm
Ventura artist Dorothy Hunter says a 1960 visit to New York City that included its famous art museums sparked her passion for abstract painting.
Her first solo show in Washington, D.C., two years later launched a lifetime of successful creativity that continues with “The Essential Dorothy Hunter,” the next exhibit at Buenaventura Art Association’s Harbor Village Gallery.
It will open Jan. 11 and run through Feb. 6, with an artist’s reception from 5-8 p.m. Jan. 13. Normal gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Wednesdays through Mondays.
Hunter employs bold forms, vivid colors and textures to create oils on canvas that become dreamscapes reminiscent of landscapes and seascapes. Though inspired by real views, she never takes photos, preferring to replay the images in her head. She then paints from her subconscious mind, she said, with a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack in her studio.
Her way of working has evolved over the years, she said, and “I try very hard not to repeat myself.”
The Harbor Village show will include paintings from many segments of Hunter’s 50-year career as an abstract painter, in a wide range of sizes.
