Shirley Ransom - We'll Miss You!
|
|
Shirley Ransom passed away on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007. Buenaventura Art Association extends our deepest sympathy to her family.
Shirley was a long-time BAA board member and (as you can tell by her photo) a vibrant force in our community. She is seen holding the postcard from the 20th Annual Open Competition. The image on the postcard is her prize-winning piece from the 19th Annual Open Competition.
Make sure and visit her artist page to see some of her work.
Members and the public are invited to post memories of Shirley. Just email the gallery with your thoughts, and we'll post them on this page.

When I think of Buenaventura Art Association it is Shirley Ransom's face I see. She was the first person I met when becoming an exhibiting member 8 years ago. We worked together on committees and served on the Board together, became instant friends and shared similar approaches and ideas regarding our painting. It has been a delight and privilege to know her and I will miss those phone conversations that started out with "how are you anyway"" and ended an hour later in peals of laughter. But mostly I will miss Shirley. We have lost an accomplished artist, wonderful human being and great friend.

The world is a little bit poorer place today with the passing of Shirley Ransom. I worked with her for over 20 years, and even when she was feeling poorly from a health issue, she chose to see the bright side of things. She was a good friend, mentor, cheerer-upper. When I was gallery director, I could always count on Shirley for good advice, encouragement, firm opinions, a wonderful sense of humor, and good will. I, like Chris, will always remember her smile, and her laughter. She genuinely enjoyed life, she gave generously of her time, her talents and her treasure. She left this world a better place for having lived, laughed and loved. Shirley, I will miss you.

I'm so sorry, I can't believe it! I didn't know she was ill... I just spoke with her to let her know her painting was in the show... of course. She was so sweet on the phone... what a loss, indeed.

| Sad, sudden , situation,
I find my self stunned to read about Shirleys passing. I served on the board with Shirley for many years. I enjoyed her company very much. When I was brave enough to start showing my work, she was always so positive and encouraging to me personally. She made me feel like I was somebody, and that she cared about me. I will truly miss her.

| I am so sorry to hear the news about Shirley. I have been a member of BAA so long and what I remember is that she was always one of the most active members of the gallery. She would always be there helping out and getting shows going. Less that a year ago Shirley bought one of my sculptures and was so nice in telling me how much she loved it etc. She was one of those people who really shaped the gallery for years and it is hard to believe she is gone. May she rest in peace. . .

Shirley was a very dear friend of mine, We painted together almost every Wednesday, of course a lot of chatting took place too. We were both long time members of Women Painters West where she was active for many years and won numerous prizes in the competitive exhibits. Shirley was always ready to help in any way that she thought
needed her assistance. She was past president of PEO, a womens organization. She had foster children who have kept in touch with her for years. She was also an exhiting member of Studio Channel Islands Art Center. What a terrific, wonderful, giving person !

So sorry to hear about Shirley. I studied with her about 25 years ago and she was very instrumental in my development as a painter. It was always a pleasure to be in her presence.

| Shirley was a gracious person, a generous and funny lady. She was a dedicated artist and her paintings often had a wonderful sly humor that I always looked forward to. I will miss that and her.

| Shirley was the person who called me to let me know that my artwork had been selected for a solo show at the BAA some years ago. That changed my life forever!
Thank you Shirley, I will miss you!

| I was just knocked over by the news; just too damned soon to lose such a wonderful person. I had no idea she was ill, and spent most of the evening crying, ( some sobbing), when I heard, but all I could think of was Shirley's smiling face!!! I will miss her so much, she was so much fun to talk to,we liked to share our travel stories. She usually had on some cute outfit with nice colors and some great fun earrings, just loving life. And I couldn't wait to see her latest work, she had such a sense of humor. She was so Interested and Encouraging and Fun and I will always think of Shirley with that beautiful smile on her face. I am just grateful I knew her.

I, too, will miss Shirley. She was always supportive of me as an artist and a friend to Studio Channel Islands Art Center. Her sense of humor and outlook on life was refreshing as so portrayed in her art. Her use of American Icons such as the Statue of Liberty and something as simple as the cow always tickled me. I wish that she was still here.
