20th Annual Open Competition: Jan. 10 - Feb. 4, 2006
Matthew Furmanski, Professor at California State University at Channel Islands

Juror: Matthew Furmanski

Furmanski received his B.F.A in Studio Art from Chapman University and his M.F.A. in Studio Art from the Claremont Graduate School. He is a recipient of a Durfee ARC grant and has been published in numerous periodicals and catalogues including the Los Angeles Times and Art in America. Professor Furmanski has also collaborated with other artists and institutions including the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and the Getty. He is on the Public Arts Commission for the City of Ventura. He was born and raised in Southern California and enjoys spending time surfing, sailing and traveling with his family.
Furmanski is a contemporary sculptor who often uses recognizable materials closely associated with industry and functionality but places them within an art context and arrange them in ways, which both deny concrete use and maintain their integrity as sculpture. This flickering between the world of industry and use value, and the realm of the aesthetic object, will activate a difference in thinking and imaginative leaps in the minds of those who encounter them. For more information, visit his website at www.matthewfurmanski.com.

Each year, artists from all over Ventura County compete in this prestigous competition. Over $1,000 in cash prizes.
