John Parker

I call these pieces Textured Tablets. They combine my love of wood, language, nature, mystery and wonder. The individual pieces are intended as glimpses out of the corner of the eye – fragments of perceptions on fragments of wood.

Among its meanings, a tablet is a slab of wood for a picture or inscription. These Textured Tablets are wall hangings made from hard maple wood, which are incised with words and figurative beings.

I have worked in wood in various genres for 35 years. I’ve evolved these pieces, both content and medium, over a long period of time, and of course it’s endlessly evolving. I find Textured Tablets particularly satisfying to create and I enjoy sharing them.
