When I have an idea for a painting, I do a basic sketch. Then, I splash on the color finding shapes, movement and values. I become one with the painting. It is an emotional yet creative process. However, many changes do occur to make the statement that is my concept of completion. It is exciting to stand back and realize that the work piece is an expression of what I wanted to convey. Of course the opposite does happen so a complete renovation takes place.
Many excellent artists have been an influence in my work. Gaining my degree in fine arts from Washington State University gave good basics. Studying in New York City at the Traphagen School of Design was a fulfilling challenge. Even the commercial experience of doing layouts and designs was a necessary discipline.
When I studied at San Francisco State University, non-objective theory was the only acceptable form of expression. This was an excellent study of shapes, color, values, and textures without any realistic reference. Across the bay, the figurative artists such as Diebenkorn and David Parks were making their creative statements. They are still a strong influence on my work. In summary, I like to make expressive work, utilizing creativity and making a strong statement.
